Bug Hunting - 4th February 2022

Room project - Insects:

The Joeys have been really interested in bugs so as part of their learning the Joeys are doing a room project on bugs. So today we included a bug hunt into the program. Sandra (educator) gathered some plastic bugs together, magnifying glasses and Bug catchers. Sandra, Kavitha (educator)and Massa (educator) got the children to sit on the mat while I went and hid the plastic bugs. Once I had finished hiding all the bugs Sandra sent Jenayah ,Marlee, Pilar and Nathan first to come and find the bugs so they were given a magnifying glass and bug catcher and they got up and followed me set off to find the bugs, first the children found a bug in a pot plant and Marlee said" beetle" it was a fly. I said to the children it was a fly.

By this stage the other children had come over and started to bug hunt as well. Mun found a frog and showed it to Kavitha, Pilar found a grasshopper and showed it to me. Eloise, Elya, Neveah, Isaiah, Aarvi found a frog and Elijah looked on, Nathan found a bird toy and he squealed when he found it, Hunter went over and pick the bird toy up and looked at it. Lucas picked up the grass hopper and was looking at it closely. As each of the bugs was found I explained to the children what it was.

When all the bugs were found the children placed them into a bag and Massa then took the children onto the grassed area and they were looking for real bugs. Sandra saw a caterpillar and we carefully got it off the tree with a leaf and placed it in a bug catcher for the children to look at. It was explained to the children what it was.

Interpretation

Critical Reflection:As an educator I was able to provide intentional teaching through explaining about what each bug was. It was an activity that provided a lot of exploring our environment and social interaction with each other. Follow up: More bug project activities
