Dinosaurs Play - 22nd June 2021

Spontaneous:

This morning the children were playing outside when Caleb found a Dinosaur. Joshua ran over to find one too but wasn't having much luck. So I said to the boys "would you like me to find you some more?". "Yes " was the reply. I found the Dinosaurs and brought them over to the table, the boys picked two each. I said to Caleb what Dinosaurs do you have and to my surprise Caleb said Stegosaurus. "Wow, Caleb you know your Dinosaurs?". "Yes "he said, then picked up the other Dinosaur and stroked its back saying Spinosaurus. "How clever are you Mister Caleb". Joshua had the T-Rex and the Brachiosaurus and he said to me look the T-Rex has three feet, as he counts the feet. The other children were very interested in the Dinosaurs too. So I went inside and found some more soft Dinosaurs and brought them out for them. The children sat themselves down and moved the Dinosaurs around the table . Nyiel patting my leg and said "Dinosaurs", showing me her one. "That's right" I replied.Pilar had a little girl puppet and a small Dinosaur, she was banging them together making babbling sounds. Kavith stood back, with some encouragement from myself he joined the group. Jack sat down for a bit before moving onto the other toys. Our little Hunter found himself under the table with a small Dinosaur moving it about while as our Lorenzo is a climber who managed to join the group and quiet proud of himself.

Theorists

This learning experience can be linked to Piaget's theories. He believes that children need to be able to see, touch, move and hear things they are learning about. This is called concrete learning.

Interpretation

Critical Reflection: By following Caleb's cue I was able to find the dinosaurs we then had lots of open-ended conversations while the children used their imagination in this play. Follow up: Find a book on dinosaurs to read to them.
