Playing with blocks - 5th November 2021

Spontaneous: This morning the children were playing outdoors. I brought a box of colourful blocks to the stage for the children to play with. It was nice to see children surrounding the box like honeybees surround flowers. They all tried to pick up the blocks they wanted and sat on the stage. They then tried to build construct using the blocks. Mun and Daniel played together. Marlee was very interested with the blocks, she stacked the blocks on top of each other and made a big tower. Nathan and Hunter came near the box, took few blocks in their hands and ran away. Elijah took one block at a time from the box and collected them on the floor. Elya liked playing with the blocks. She took blocks in both hands and tried to fix them. Aarvi as always is fascinated with blocks played with them for a while. She built a tower and showed it to me, "look, look". She was also able to identify the colour of the blocks. Pilar sat near the box for while and concentrated to play with the blocks for a while. Finally Jenayah and Nevaeh came to the stage. Jenayah was excited to see the blocks. She shared some blocks to her sister Nevaeh and they played for a bit with the blocks. The children had a social play this morning sharing the blocks with their friends.

EYLF Outcomes

Outcomes: 4: Children are confident and involved learners Elements: 4.1 Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity. The children in this learning experience were curious and confident to implement their own ideas while playing with blocks.

Theorists

This learning experience can be linked to Piaget's theories. He believed that children are active learners and that the children must be given opportunities to explore, discover and experiment. These principals underpin all cognitive development.

Interpretation

Critical Reflection: I offered children different resource (blocks) for a relaxed play in the outdoor area. I was happy that children enjoyed the experience. It was difficult to keep the blocks on the stage since babies tried to throw away or take the blocks to different outdoor areas. Follow up: Different construction resources.
